As we prepare for the rollout of the 9th Edition (2026) Florida Fire Prevention Code, I want to proactively share some important changes that will affect your facility’s fire door compliance. The new Florida code adopts the 2022 edition of NFPA 80, which introduces several updated requirements for fire door inspections, repairs, and maintenance.

Here are the key operational changes you need to be aware of:

  • Expanded 13-Point Checklist: The annual visual inspection criteria for swinging fire doors has been expanded. We are now required to explicitly verify and document label legibility and signage compliance on every door.

  • Mandatory Post-Maintenance Inspections: An official inspection and documented sign-off is now strictly required immediately after any maintenance or repair work is completed on a fire door assembly to ensure it remains compliant.

  • Signage Fasteners: The code has relaxed previous fastener bans. It now permits the use of up to four steel or stainless steel sheet metal screws (up to U.S. size #8) to attach metal signs to one side of a fire door.

  • Field Labeling Restrictions: Field labeling is now strictly limited to the original listing agency that maintains the product’s follow-up inspection service. Uncertified third-party labels are no longer permitted.

  • Rolling Steel Doors: Drop tests and system resets for rolling steel fire doors can no longer be performed by general maintenance staff; they must now be conducted by a formally trained rolling steel fire door technician.

At USA Fire Doors Inspection, our reports and executive summaries are already being updated to reflect these 13-point checklist standards, ensuring your facilities remain fully compliant without any disruption.

If you have any questions about how these changes impact your upcoming annual inspections or any current repair projects, please feel free to reach out.
